Reading Journal 1 - TRADING PLACES

My dear Flight Training students,

I'd like to assign the first reading journal task from  the periodical Flight Training 03.12.

I'd like you write the story "Trading Places" from the father's point - of -view in 150-200 words. In other words, if the father in the story told what had happened that day, how would he do that?
You may want to begin with a sentence like this: "I was with my son in a rented Cessna 172 on a Friday night headed to Las Vegas..."
Your journals are due next Wednesday (March, 13).

Late journal entries will not be accepted. All journal entries should be done on the web. Pen-and-paper submissions will be returned.

Looking forward to reading the father's account of the story,
Have a great week!

  1. My son his pal Brad Bruno and I were in the rented Cessna 172. The three of us had taken off from Long Beach California on a Friday night and we were headed to Las Vegas. Brad and my son had just turned 21 and I was riding shotgun coming along to show them the ropes at the casinos.
We weren't even halfway to Las Vegas counting taillights on the 91 Freeway east of Corona. The 172's instrument panel lights began dimming at first much like your car dashboard lights might auto adjust to a darkening evening then they made subtle flickers and pulses. The radios began to fade and sound garbled the voice of the air traffic controller became more distant the volume deteriorating along with the flickering instrument ligthts.
When my son looked over to me for assistance I appered more nervous than he was. I wasn't a pilot. Neither was Brad. Neither of us had been a small airplane before tonigth. In fact it was my son's first cross-country flight since getting his private pilot certificate the week before.
Brad began to move around nervously in the Cessna's backseat and he poked his head up front looking to hear some reassuring news. My son peered down at the bottom left side of the Cessna's yoke to see that the alternator failed. He cycled the left-hand side of the master switch in an attempt because of a reason which I don't know. It did not work he said. I was just watching what he was doing.
My son's face was getting red. He was breathing faster and he wanted some water. After drinking it he took a few moments to tell Brad and me our status. I am sure that the engine will continue to run as long as we have gas he said.
I smiled at my son but I had known that it was not a real smile. I was so anxious. As the airplane became completely dark the engine continued to run as mys on said. We put our collective faith in the Cessna. We agreed We would fly back to Long Beach instead of landing on the nearest little strip of pavement and having to stay in a motel or take a cab back to Long Beach. My son started to apply the things that we decided. Now there was just a few lights in aircraft.
We had become silent. I could understand taht my son was sad but he was trying not to show his unhappiness us. He was just trying to land us safely. I was frustrated. Actually I was angry with my son because he had finished flight school and we were in a emergency now. In fact there were nothing that he could do but I wanted to find a guilty becaouse of my feeling.
We were just hearing the voice of the propeller. Brad's head was in the front seat between mine and my son's. The three of us willing our tiny airplane safely home. On normal flight pilots are scruntinized by their passengers on how smooth their landings are. In an emergency nobodty cares how you get on the ground as long as you can walk away from it.
On the horizon I saw a solid-green light in the direction of the airport tower bright enough to view from our position. Long Beach was telling us that tge runway was clear for us to land. We were approaching the runway and it was brightly litting.
One green light more was sent from tower. I and Brad sat perfectly still an advertisement for calm airline passengers on the in-flight safety movie our hearts silently pounding away.
I said Is that it? We are on the ground? and out came a windy sigh of relief. In the light of the white runway centerline lights we saw the deep wrinkles in the center of his forehead thin and shallow a calm immediately after our return to the Earth.
We all gave power to each other at that night but it was more important for my son. Because he was thinking that I had never given power before. Also I had never thrusted as that night before.
I bought them something to eat at the diner down the road from the airport after my son made a quick phone call to Long Beach Tower thanking them for their help. They were just glad that everything was OK. Then we hopped into my truck and we drove all nights to Las Vegas. I was tired but I insisted on driving the whole way.

    1. Alper, you could have kept the narrative from the father's point of view shorter by just summarizing the story. However, you've written the story as if the narrator is the father. Well done, keep up the good work:)

I was with my son in a rented Cessna 172on a friday night headed to Las Vegas .My son graduated from flight school just two week ago then he started job an airline company .My son and I decided to go to Las Vegas in order to celibrate his graduation .I was very excited because ı have never seen my son in the cokpit before .My son also was very excited because this flight was his first cross-country flight .Finally we took off from Long Beach airport at 9:00 pm .Everything was fine we were happy in 15 minutes of our extraordinary flight but after 15 minutes 172’s instrument panel light broken down .Aeroplane became completely dark .I was shocked and litle bit anxious .My son immediately call ATC. My son took fright I can understand easily.I have to help to him .My son is not experienced pilot but he faced a lot of emergency situation during his training . He can cope with this problem but I felt compelled to help him nevertheless because if he feel my confidence with him he will be relax so that he can give correct decisions .We agreed we would fly back to California ATC knew our emergency situation .Then we aproach the airport we could not see anything in the cokpit but we could see solid-green light in the direction of the airport tower .My son landed on the Cessna 172 perfectly .We became calm after return the earht .I remember that moment specifially . 3. Today my son will have his first cross-country fligth. Since he got his certificate the week before that's not surprising.
I also will attend this flight so does brad bruno a friend of my son.I don't remember exactly the name of the plane but i guess it was something like
chestak something. My son will take us to las vegas or so we thought.after some timein the air i saw the fear in my boy's eyes and tried to motivate him.after a while
in the air something went wrong. The lights in the plane went dark and i saw my son get terrified but i was in a worst state then him.I wanted to swear inside but the only thing i can do is to smile.
I saw my son looking at me and trying to voice me over.I think my son felt that i was scared and somehow i could sense he somesort of hightened? My memory is not that good. As he tried to land us somehow
confident that my son will land us safely. Then i pretended that i didn't hear anything see anything till we started to lose attitude.then i felt some kind o impact not strong enought to crash to the ground but
too light for us to land safely.I asked my son to verify that did we land or not.and I realized that it was true for me to count on my son with my life.

    1. Kaya, you have well understood how might the father have felt in that incident...well done! Just a little note about your story:
The story begins as if the flight has not happened yet but then suddenly the father starts telling what happened during the flight. This is distracting for the reader to follow what you have written.
      Keep up your good work:)

  4. It was a good Friday night to take a trip to Las Vegas.I wanted to show my trust to my son about his skills.I was proud of him, because he had got his private pilot certificate last week.Me, my son and Brad rented a cessna and began to our crazy journey. It all was seemed okay. The weather was appropriate for flight.Moon and stars were shining. Our rented cessna was seemed a little bit old ,but ı did not care much about it.For first ten minute of flight was quite good. Then suddenly, when we were not even halfway to Vegas, panel lights began dimming, radio was silent.I got shocked.I guessed battery of plane is dead, and there was nothing ı could.I looked at my son ,he was looking at me too.I was not a pilot,I could not do anything. He seemed to me like a ten year old of his.I was telling myself ‘’how could I let him taking to Vegas by that plane?’’.I was thinking we were going to die.But the my son had changed.I saw the man that ı needed to see.He closed all electrical devices. We need to make a decision.Should we land on somewhere below or should we go back home?By the decision all of us, we changed our rotate to the home.I was frightened and anxious but I hid my feelings to my son. Then I saw Long Beach Tower.Somehow my son told them that we were about to land. And then we were on the ground.I could not believe.I said ‘’Is that it?we’re on the ground?’’I was really exhausted because of fear. After my son made a phone call thanking them for their help.I decided we should eat something after all these chaos.A man is always happy when he is full.I did not let our night become a bpring night. So I offered them going to Vegas by my truck. They accepted but ı have got one condition; I was going to drive and I did.

    1. Öykü, the father's story couldn't be better:) I enjoyed reading this version of the story a lot, especially the parts when the father saw the man he needed to see during the flight. You somehow created a father character like when he thought "A man is always happy when he is full"
I'm impressed by your creativity...Not mentioning some grammar mistakes though...
      Thank you

  5. I was with my son in a rented Cessna 172 on a Friday night headed to Las Vegas with Brad who is my son's pal. My son and Brad had just turned 21, and I was riding shotgun, coming along to show them the ropes at the casinos. We had not reached to Las Vegas yet, and there had been much time to reach there. Firstly, the 172's instrument panel lights began dimming, then they made subtle flickers and pulses. There was a problem , but i should not have showed my worries because the pilot who flied with this ailrcraft was my son and i should have been the man who he had trusted without any doubt, and I should have showed him that also I had trusted him. When I looked my son, my son also looking over me.He seemed so nervous, but I was more nervous than him. I believe that he is a good pilot, but he was a new pilot, and he had got his private pilot sertificate. Brad began to move around nervously in the Cessna's backseat. I did not know what was happening. He tried something I could not understand, but he seemed that he knew what he should have done. I was so nervous, then I noticed that my son was sweating. Yes, there was a big problem, and he told us the status. Then I forced myself to give a smile on my face. I had no control, nothing substantial to offer to the situation. Then we agreed that we would fly back to Long Beach. He did some controls I could not understand, and there were just the beacon and navigation lights. Flying in the dark sky made me anxious, but I believed, had to believe that my son would do the best. Then one green light seemed. This meant that we were about the airport. Then Long Beach Tower sent one green light again, to assure our landing clearence. Brad and I sat perfectly still, and my son pulled the yoke, brought the throttle to idle, and put the airplane into a gentle flare for a no flaps landing. Then I was so happy, either my son and Brad. At that time, I again remember that my son is a great pilot, and this is my son, and he deserves more trust than I trusted at first time. I bought them something to eat at dinner down the road from the airport. Then we hooed into my truck, and we drove all night to Las Vegas. I was tired, but I drove the whole way because I love my truck ;)

  6. My son, his friend and me rent a Cessna 172 for a journey. Our arrival point was California .Destination point was Las Vegas. My son get pilot license just one week ago. Something happened wrong and I was nervous. Then my son started laughing like a crazy. He must have been more serious. My son was using the aircraft himself. He looked outside and he realized that the alternator was failed. He called me but I could not response. I forced myself to laugh. We changed our decision and we went back to long beach. My son changed our transponder code to indicate to ATC that we’d had a radio failure and began a gradual descent toward the west. After a moment we got silent. Suddenly my son overflowed. We wished to back home safely. Our gasoline almost finished. Finally, we were on the ground at the same time I had to believe my son. Fortunately we were together. We ate something. Even if we were tired, I drove the truck. When we arrived to Las Vegas, I was exhausted.

  8. That was a good night to go Las Vegas with my son and Brad who is my son's pal. My son has just got his private pilot certificate. We wanted to fly with the Cessna 172 from Long Beach, California to Las Vegas. We left my truck at the airport and we took off from there with 172. After a while, suddenly my son started to worry because of a reason we could not understand. There was a problem but he could not tell us at first. We saw that the radios began to fade and sound garbled; the voice of the air traffic controller became more distant, the volume deteriorating along with the flickering instrument light. I was so nervous and also Brad was, but we could not understand what was happening because we were not pilots, just as a pilot my son was there. Altough I was worry I had to trust my son, and I trusted him. When he saw us that we were anxious, he explained what was happening. Yes, there was a problem with engines. We were more nervous than my son, but I totally trusted to my son. He understtod how we feeled, so he tried to make us calm. I forced myself to smile. Then we agreeed that we should turned back. In the dark sky with the bright stars, we were flying. Brad and I sat and waited what would happen. Then a green light seemed. We were reached again to Long Beach , and the green light were coming from the tower of Long Beach. We landed gently to the airport. I was nervous, but I trsuted to my son. He was a good pilot, and I am his dad. After landing, I bought something to eat , and we went on with my truck to Las Vegas.

  10. During the my life, I wanted to be pilot ,however I did not do it not only economic reasons ,but also some situation which is related to my healt.Even though I did not become a pilot, I helped to my son for being a pilot.I can say that I tried to provide him everything .At the end of the this prosess, he became a pilot.Maybe it was one of the best thing which I saw in the world for me .That day not only for my son but also is the most important day because my son had first cross country flight since getting private pilot certificate the week before. When he got in the aircraft ,he got nervous.I could read from his face. Therefore, I gave some words to be able to gain self confidence and strength and then he controled everything which is essential part for flight. After these thing, he did to take off .In my opinion, that was the most hardest one for him because when he did it, he was getting sweat.By the way I was as nervous as my son. Although these thing ,he could achieve to take off as individual. After we flighted about an hour, he rotated the aircarft toward the runway. In this time,he also got nervous for landing. To overcome this situation, I gave him more trust like you can do it ,we are counting on you and then he landed to the runway safely. When the wheels of the aircraft touched the ground,I said to myself that this was the best thing I have ever done.

  14. I was with my son in a rented Cessna 172 on a Friday night headed to Las Vegas and his best friend Brad Bruno was alongside us. I was very excited because my very beloved son just had his private pilot license and I had the chance of being with him in his first cross country flight. In the morning of the flight day, I have learnt that our flight was going to be delayed to late hours of the day. It was a surprising news for me because I had never been in a night flight. At the beginning of flight I was sitting of on my seat with peace of mind. After a little time, cockpit light began to show some problems. At first, I thought it is a normal thing to happen like it happens every flight. I did not understand why light were dimming, nor my son look like he did. He tried some procedure to fix the lights, but nothing had changed. I tried to look confident and sure that he can fix it, there were not going to happen. It was so hard to stay calm and not frightened, I was really nervous. My son probably understand that i began to scare, which is not a desirable situation for a father while he is with his son. After that, he explained the situation to us and talked with ATC. He decided to fly back. I cannot even look anywhere, everywhere was pitch black and there was no light. After a while, he told that we were about to land. I was still thinking that we could die. Later I could not believe that we landed safely and asked my son that if it is over or not. It was the most dreadful event of my life. Even I do not know if it was my son did something wrong or it was the plane faulty, I do believe that it was a mistake to take a trip with a rookie pilot.
